Cubing the sphere
Well, umm, I ran out of shampoo? And I was quite surprised to find that my head approximates a sphere rather well... so, assuming a spherical physicist, the following origami puzzle folds into a two inch cube:

If you're feeling a tenth as goofy as I am, print out the large version here, cut out the whole square, and fold...

The brown lines are "hill folds," with the paper folding up away from the front and creating an edge facing you, and the green lines are "valley folds," with the paper folding back and making an edge away from you. The strategy I recommend is to crease the paper in the right directions first along all the fold lines, then assemble the whole thing, folding the resulting flaps in on themselves starting with the cluster of folds in the lower right, until it holds together tightly as a cube, with only faces showing. It's kind of tricky. :) Please send me a comment or email if you make it, as I'd like to keep track of who has my head...

Ahh, they also make nice atheist x-mas ornaments, to go along with the other bulbs. Hee.

Dude seriously.

Next time, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!

You have too much time on your hands er, head.

It was good to see you again this weekend!

Really; it's more ellipsoid.

I think you should make a few, and carry them around for opportune moments. I'd love to hand my banker a little paper cube with my head on it. Or maybe you could hand them to lovely women you meet while out...

Ok. That last suggestion was weird.

Yes, but "assume an ellipsoidal physicist" spoils the joke.

The idea of handing them out as 3D business cards is pretty funny.

And, yes, very weird. Fortunately, I only meet lovely women over the net, where weirdness seems to be more of a virtue.

I'm going to go for the obvious, and say "I like." You have the perfect head for it : )

Aww, thanks.

Hmm, I suspect I must have appealed to your atrophied punk aesthetic.

You have a lovely shaped head.
Will you keep it like this for a long while?
Will you become everyone's token 'bald-headed' friend now? :)

We printed it and made it into a cube.
Today I will print it in color and DJ gets to put it together.
Coincidentally, he was putting together a mobile of his origami cubes for showcasing at his school, and you were this close... to being part of it. Alas, timing did not work out. But he did say he will bring it to school.

Thanks -- I was happy not to find any odd lumps or Gorbachev splotches. Part of my motivation for shaving was to see just where I was heading naturally. Heh.

I can't really "keep it" per say, as I grow hair, umm, rapidly. But it's certainly the most easily reproducible haircut I've ever had, so I can have it at will.

And, sure, I'm happy to be the token bald guy. But I'm still scaring the hell out of myself when I walk in front of mirrors -- gonna take some getting used to. Plus, my head gets cold now.

Yay! I'm glad someone actually made the cube! OK, this is also rather odd, having my head out there. Maybe Dune would enjoy making similar cubes of himself, you, and R? (without the shaving part of course -- yikes) Fun project with photoshop and a digital camera. And that way my head won't feel so alone.

Success

Yes, the folding was rather tricky. Maybe some of those lines need to be cuts rather than folds? I used a bit of tape at the end to get all the flaps to stay inside... and voila. I have your head on my desk. I'll be bringing you along to the futurist Delusions of Grandeur party in Hollywood tomorrow. You'll fit right in.

Well... I don't know if it counts as success if you needed tape. ;) Really, if it's folded right all the flaps interlock and the thing holds together. It's downright origasmic when it works.

Yes, sorry to miss that -- sounds like it would be fun. But am quite pleased my head will be in attendance. It certainly did take some grand delusion to put my head on the net for people to fold up -- but, I'm quite happy to hear about my head sprouting up in usual locations. (:-)
