The horror
C and I are hanging out in LA for a few weeks, near the beach in Santa Monica. On our walk today, we saw the most terrible combination of two things imaginable:

A christian mime troupe.

I hurried C away as soon as my brain processed the horror of what I was looking at -- "No dear, don't look, it will scar you."

Anyway, if any of you LA peeps have ideas for fun things to do and see while we're here, we're all ears. It can only get better.

Hey, I'm in LA!

The beach is good. I also like hiking around in the Angeles crest mountains. Just go up highway 2 (for example) and explore.

I can show you our lab at Caltech if you want!

Sure Tobin, I'll come hang out at Caltech for an afternoon. Maybe we can grab some lunch.
I should warn you though, in grad school my experimental friends were always kinda frightened to have me in their lab -- something about not touching things...
Some day next week maybe?

The Getty is a shoo-in tourist attraction. Not too far from you, and it's free! (You do have to pay for parking however.)

Make sure you drive along Mulholland from the 405 to Cahuenga at least once, preferably at night.

Yep, we will most certainly visit the Getty.

I went shortly after it opened -- amazing building. Art was OK. ;)
But C hasn't seen it, so we'll go.

Hmm, is there a way to avoid the parking fee? Park in the Getto somewhere?

Yeah, the art at the Getty is incidental. They could put old newspapers on the gallery walls and I wouldn't care.

Dunno about avoiding the parking fee. It's a long walk from anywhere. But it's $5 or something along those lines. I assume you consider that to be a petty expense, or you wouldn't have ventured into our city. :)

My cheapness is boundless.

But ya, no kidding, went out to dinner last night here in Santa Monica and nearly fainted.

you can park elsewhere and walk or take the bus in. Ask Lisette.

You can also take the bus (depending on where you start from)! It will drop you off right at the entrance of the Getty :)

Make sure you "play the walls".

I'm looking forward to adventuring with you! You'll be in town until June 24, yes?

That's priceless.

I think you missed a good opportunity though. I would have stood transfixed with morbid fascination. You may never see something like that again!

Isn't this the very reason we all left the mainland in the first place?
